Safe Torque Off (STO) – torque safely switched off

Our expertise series continues! Today: Safe Torque Off (STO) – safe torque off.

Without electric motors nothing works nowadays: pumping liquids, transporting heavy materials, moving air masses – and all with maximum reliability. The esitron drive motors contain extensive functions – suitable for the respective application. One is Safe Torque Off (STO) refers to a safety function integrated into the drive. When this is activated, the motor is no longer supplied with rotation – or motion-causing energy. The power output stage of the drive does not supply any energy to the motor that can generate torque or (in the case of a linear motor) force. It can be used in applications where the axis comes to a stop on its own in a sufficiently short time due to its load torque or friction, or when axis coasting has no safety relevance. The STO function is defined as the default functionally safe state. Therefore it is the final fallback function.
