Fun with Drives! No. 8: Decentralized vs. Centralized Servo Controllers

What are the advantages and disadvantages of decentralized drive controllers compared to control cabinet controllers?

In a nutshell:
Decentralized drive controllers offer the following advantages:
✔️Modularity
✔️Lower total cost (fewer cables, no control cabinet)
✔️Less cabling required
✔️Easier scalability

Compact drives (i.e., motors with controllers) offer significant advantages, particularly in applications involving long cable runs, modular systems, and production lines—and especially when control cabinets and cable ducts are made of stainless steel. These advantages are particularly pronounced in machines where modules can be added or removed as needed.

Central controllers have their advantages:
✔️in the higher power range –> especially from 1.5–2 kW
✔️with short cable lengths
✔️when there is very little space on the axes

I go into more detail about this in the video.
